Body of work
Today, whenever I hear about a conflict, I still see images of my home region as I came to know it – destroyed, fractured, wounded. For whatever the place, the traditions or the people, it is always a home that is destroyed, a life that is cut short, and survivors who must rebuild, piece by piece, a life that is no more.
The fragments of places I depict are not currently at war, but they could become so, and perhaps they already have been. These images represent shattered fragments of places affected by conflict.
I am particularly interested in spaces where life has been put on hold – places devoid of human presence, yet where traces of habitation offer a glimpse of their former existence, based on sketches made on the spot or using archive images.
Here, a window stands ajar; there, washing hangs to dry on a line.
